From a village with no electricity to Silicon Valley CEO

Amin Sukhera grew up in a remote South Punjab village where his mother sold her jewellery to buy him a bicycle for school. He taught himself mathematics, cold-approached a Sun Microsystems engineer at a university seminar, and ended up as VP of Engineering at FireEye — a company that went public with nearly a billion dollars in annual revenue. He came back to Pakistan to run SkyElectric, a solar-plus-cloud-plus-cybersecurity platform he believes is the future of energy distribution.

A village with no electricity, no bicycle, and no guidance

The episode opens with Muzamil introducing Amin Sukhera as a guest he had been trying to book for two years — not out of courtesy, but because of what SkyElectric is actually doing with artificial intelligence and energy optimisation. What follows is one of the more surprising origin stories to appear on the show.

Amin was born in a village called Thuthewali, roughly fifty kilometres from Bahawalnagar, near the Indian border in South Punjab. There was no primary school in the village itself. The nearest one was a kilometre and a half away; the middle school was ten kilometres out. His parents could not afford a bicycle. His mother sold her jewellery — her wedding jewellery — to buy him one.

“Study was a farar for me,” Amin says, using the Urdu word for escape. The family’s livelihood was an acre and a half of land, and he knew early that farming was not where he was going. He read anything he could find — newspapers, books, the paper wrapped around pakoras from a street stall. Mathematics turned out to be his anchor. In primary and middle school, he says, “whoever is doing good in mathematics and English would be the superstar of the school.” He was that person.

He had never seen a city until his middle school board exams took him to Donga Ponga. He had never worn trousers until his first semester at Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad.

Teaching himself BSc mathematics from scratch

After a near-miss with MBBS — he fell short of the merit cutoff, partly because of a policy reserving seats for girls that was later reversed — Amin enrolled briefly at an agriculture university in Faisalabad, lasted one week, and walked out. He came home, told his parents he was going to do a BA with English literature and sit the CSS exam, and then met a college principal named Chaudhry Yusuf who changed the direction entirely.

Chaudhry Yusuf told him: do a BSc with double mathematics and physics, so that if CSS does not work out, you can at least become a science teacher. He also told Amin he could sit in on classes for free.

What happened next is remarkable. Amin had forgotten almost everything from FSc-level mathematics — he says the only formula he could recall was cos²θ + sin²θ = 1. He tracked down a professor in Multan whose notes were famous, travelled there by bus on borrowed money, and copied them out by hand. He found a physics professor in Lahore at Islamia College, Civil Lines, who agreed to teach him without charging a fee. He studied FSc mathematics alongside BSc material simultaneously, with no formal enrolment in any institution.

When the BSc results came: 396 out of 400 in mathematics. Applied pure mathematics: 200 out of 200. Mathematics A: 196 out of 200, with four marks lost because he selected questions worth slightly fewer marks than he realised. He finished the paper in ninety minutes of a three-hour sitting and walked out.

“I cannot move on until I understand everything,” he tells Muzamil. “I am very thorough in that. If interest ki nahi hai, I cannot do it. It’s so black and white.”

The seminar, the floppy disk, and the first job

After completing a master’s in computer science at QAU — graduating in March 1996, having entered in February 1994 — Amin spent four months in Islamabad unable to find work. His savings ran out. He was about to return to Bahawalnagar and resume giving private tuitions when he heard that a man from Sun Microsystems in the United States was coming to the university to give a seminar on Java, a language almost nobody in Pakistan had heard of in 1996.

Amin printed his CV, put his project on a floppy disk, and arrived early enough to take the chair closest to the door. The moment the seminar ended and the speaker — Ashar Aziz — moved toward the exit, Amin intercepted him.

“Sir, yeh mera project hai. Mujhe yahan job nahi mil rahi.” He showed Aziz the floppy disk. Aziz asked him to come to his home in F-10 the next morning at ten. He reviewed the source code, liked what he saw, called his boss at Sun Microsystems in the United States, and hired Amin — not just as a programmer but as a manager responsible for setting up a small Islamabad office.

That was the beginning of a professional partnership that has now lasted, with interruptions, since 1996.

Sun Microsystems, Terra Spring, and FireEye: the Silicon Valley arc

Muzamil pauses the conversation at this point to name what is happening structurally: a man from a purely agrarian background is undergoing a simultaneous cultural, economic, and geographic shift — from village to city to America — in the space of a few years. Amin’s response is characteristically direct. He says the village noticed. People asked what he did. He told them he worked with computers. They asked if it was the kind of computer used to spray crops. He said yes, that kind.

The Silicon Valley chapter unfolds across three companies. At Sun Microsystems Pakistan, Amin worked on secure DNS. When Ashar Aziz left to found Terra Spring — a cloud virtualisation company that Amin describes as “what AWS is today, started in ‘99” — Amin followed. Terra Spring was acquired by Sun Microsystems in November 2002. Amin ended up back at Sun, this time in Silicon Valley, with a green card filed by 2004.

When Aziz left again to found FireEye, a cybersecurity company, Amin joined as one of the second or third software engineers. He rose to VP of Engineering. FireEye went public in 2013. By the time Amin resigned on his fortieth birthday in 2016 — his eleventh anniversary at the company — annual revenues were approaching a billion dollars.

“I never negotiated my salary or compensation with Ashar,” Amin says. “From my side and from his side, he never even — basically he always gave more than what I was even thinking.”

Later in the discussion, Amin reflects on what made that relationship work: Aziz never let him settle. “As soon as you feel that you are settling down, he would push you.” The gym analogy he uses is precise: muscles only grow when they are challenged. Comfort zone equals stopped growth.

Coming back: the reverse migration and the children

The family’s return to Pakistan was not clean. Amin began transitioning in 2014, buying a house in Lahore, moving the family there while still travelling to the United States quarterly. He resigned from FireEye completely in 2016 and spent roughly a year trekking in the north — Rush Lake among other places — before Ashar Aziz called again.

His children, raised in the Bay Area, did not take the move well. His eldest daughter, Aliza, was in ninth or tenth grade. Amin did not tell them they were moving permanently. He framed the Lahore house as “somewhere to stay when we visit.” The teenagers eventually understood what was happening and, in his words, “retaliated” — at home and at school. He and his wife worked through it by taking the children back to the United States every quarter, letting them see their friends, and committing that college would be in America.

All three older children have since gone to American universities. Aliza studied English literature and South Asian studies at Wellesley, worked at Tabadlab under Shezreh Zaidi, and is now at Harvard’s Kennedy School doing a Master of Public Policy. His son studied computer science at the University of Rochester and works at Cisco. His daughter at USC is majoring in neuroscience with a minor in data science — a combination Amin pushed for — and is the only undergraduate on a research project otherwise staffed entirely by PhD students.

SkyElectric: solar as a means, the platform as the product

Muzamil asks Amin to explain what SkyElectric actually is. The answer reframes the entire solar conversation.

Ashar Aziz built SkyElectric by merging three bodies of experience: cloud infrastructure from Terra Spring, cybersecurity from FireEye, and solar hardware. The result is a residential and commercial solar system monitored twenty-four hours a day by a network operations centre, with alerts sent to SkyElectric’s team when anything goes wrong. The customer does not manage the system. The platform does.

“Solar is just a means to an end,” Muzamil observes. Amin agrees immediately. “The tech stack is where the money is at. The tech stack is where the future is at.” Solar panel efficiency today sits above eighteen to twenty percent. Nobody knows where it will be in ten years. The hardware may be replaced entirely — by solar tiles, by something not yet invented. The platform, the data, the monitoring infrastructure: that does not get replaced.

Amin adds a cybersecurity dimension that most solar companies ignore entirely. As distributed energy systems connect to grids, they become attack surfaces. He points to rumours that Pakistan’s recent grid failures had a cyber component. “Anyone can log in to your system. We have seen that before, even in the US.” SkyElectric’s background in FireEye makes this a core design consideration, not an afterthought.

The company has installed over six to seven thousand systems across Pakistan, with offices in Karachi, Islamabad, and Lahore. The team is approximately four hundred people.

The government, the grid, and the economics of collapse

Muzamil raises the structural problem directly: Pakistan’s energy mix is a mess. Capacity payments are rising. The upper middle class is opting out via solar, reducing demand on the grid, which pushes per-unit costs higher for those who remain. The poor cannot pay. The government cannot subsidise indefinitely. Adding more solar capacity does not fix the underlying dysfunction.

Amin does not soften his answer. “Government made every effort to slow the damn thing down,” he says, referring to the repeated application and removal of GST on solar components. “Every other country in the world is incentivising this. We are slow-downing it.”

On the broader question of whether Pakistan’s energy crisis has a political solution, he is blunt: “Do you see any consolidated effort where everybody is sitting together, without vested interest, trying to solve this? The answer is no. Not at all.”

His prescription is personal rather than political. “If you don’t have energy independence, you have to manage that.” He draws a parallel to private security guards and private medical care — things Pakistanis with means have already privatised out of necessity. Energy is next. He has not had a generator since 2017. His home runs on a SkyElectric solar-plus-battery system. He has not replaced the batteries or the inverter in six years.

On the question of localising solar manufacturing, Amin is sceptical of copying China’s hardware model but open to joint ventures that bring Chinese manufacturing to Pakistan. “Chinese ko hum kahein ke aap apni industries idhar lagayen aur apni technology idhar lekar ayen — that’s a good model.” But SkyElectric itself will not go into panel manufacturing. The platform is the business.

Muzamil pushes further: why does SkyElectric define its core as solar at all? Why not position itself as the future distribution company — the future disco — where solar is one input among many? Amin pauses, then agrees. “Sky Electric kabhee bhi nahi khareedna chahega” a privatised disco, he says, because the existing infrastructure is too broken. But the direction Muzamil is pointing — SkyElectric as a platform that manages energy for consumers regardless of source — is where the logic leads.

Japan, California, and the global ambition

By the end of the conversation, the international picture comes into focus. SkyElectric has launched in Japan. Its product is under JET certification. California and Hawaii launches are targeted for Q4 2023 or Q1 2024. The Philippines, South Africa, and Dubai are being explored.

Muzamil notes what this implies: Pakistan is the data laboratory. The real market is global. Amin confirms it without hesitation. “You’re very smart, you’re a computer scientist — yes.” The Pakistani operation generates the data and the learning. Japan is the first cookie-cutter test. Once that model works, the pace of expansion accelerates.

Amin is careful about pace. “We are already spread too thin.” The intention is to grow sustainably, use Pakistan’s cash flows to fund Japan, and raise external capital only when the model is proven and speed becomes the priority. “We have done that in previous companies. We can scale fast.”

2050: the younger generation as the only real asset

Muzamil closes by asking Amin how he sees Pakistan in 2050. The answer has two parts.

In the short term — two to five years — Amin is not hopeful. The trend lines are deteriorating. The political will to solve structural problems does not exist. He does not say this to be dramatic. He says it because he reads data and graphs before forming views, and the graphs are not pointing up.

In the longer term, he is genuinely optimistic, and the reason is specific. “Jo hamari younger generation hai — I found them much more ethical, much more passionate, hardworking.” Globalisation through social media has shown them that other ways of working exist. They are exploring those ways.

What is missing is direction at the leadership level. His concrete proposal: double and improve the quality of software graduates, then actively market that talent internationally — go to Google, go to global companies, make the case that Pakistan has brilliant engineers. “Mere gaon mein ya mere jaise kitne gaon hain? Hazaron gaon hain. Unme koi ek hi Amin hai.” There may be thousands of people with the same potential sitting in villages across the country. The job is to find them and channel them.

He ends where he began: with the idea that initiative is the mechanism. Not connections, not money, not geography. “If you can convince somebody that you are serious about what you are doing, things happen. Everybody would help you.”
