Welcome back to another episode of thought behind things. We were trying to look for the 50 most exciting startups and businesses in Pakistan. दो तीन different fashion के लोगों को you know we had the conversation. जिसकी वजह से again it's an opportunity for local brands. But while that is happening, जो demand global products की है और उसके अंदर buying power exist नहीं करती, उसके difference को figure out करके एक business model बनाना. I think there is a actually a company who've done a phenomenal job. A lot of people have heard about them. A lot of I believe रामेश सफ़ा ने इन लोगों के साथ बड़ा conversation भी की है, काम भी की है because I think he's all about shoes and sneakers. But this is a brand that I've been looking at for a while now and मैं ख़ुद से देख रहा था क्योंकि start में जब यह आए थे early stages के अंदर तो I was very curious कि यार क्या यह चलेगा Pakistan में नहीं चलेगा? There's a lot of narrative to things like these. But the way that they've done the branding, the way that they've sort of taken the market, they're incredibly huge now. They have four retail outlets. हमारे साथ आज मौजूद हैं खज़ाने, which is basically a second hand shoes. I'm not sure if I call it a marketplace or a brand or a, But उस्मान सलीम साहब who's a founder and CEO of ख़ज़ान.
This episode of Thought Behind Things is presented in partnership with Endeavor Pakistan.
Sir, thank you so much for taking the time out and, you know, joining us. My pleasure. Before we get into ख़ज़ाने, the business, I wanna understand you. थोड़ा सा मुझे अगर बताइएगा कि where were you born? And what were some of the themes growing up that shaped you as the person that you are today?
I was born in कराची. How I was shaped? Basically I think the death of my father. I was in class eight, I was 14 years old, my father passed away. No wealth, nothing. Rent के partner ने रह रहे थे at a point we didn't even have a car, ठीक है, बसों में सफर करना, आना जाना. School के fee देना was, had become a problem, ठीक है? My brother, my elder brother who is you know five years older than me he was you know the head of the family. He became the head of the family at that time he was doing his A levels. तो he was also not that you know old. My father used to run an advertising agency और वह भी बहुत ही एक niche को serve कर रहे थे pharmaceutical industries and my father उनका business थोड़ा struggle करने लग गया था in the end of you know towards the end.
did it come completely randomly या was he you know ill for a while and you guys expected कि you know he might just pass away? I am sorry थोड़ा personal सवाल है but I trying नहीं to understand कि he was a heart patient. वह chain smoker थे and you know
but then obviously he left it smoking but I think वह एक हमारी family के अंदर है like और भी मेरे ताया चच्चा उनके अंदर भी you know heart की एक जो hereditary होती है. तो you know heart attack and you know he suffered a couple of heart attacks before but you know last वाला he couldn't survive. So yeah, तो एक family हमारी काफी you know एक we went through a lot of turmoil and schooling के बाद जो माही वहां की principal थी she you know fee में हमें वह जो एक discount मिल गया था I didn't have to pay a lot for the fee तो अलम्दो अल्लाह till my O levels एक मेरी पढ़ाई proper हो गई थी. I studied from St Michael's convent school, I started working as a graphic designer, ठीक है? Freelance graphic designer back in 2006. I started working as a graphic designer ठीक है when I was in A levels मैं अपनी school का ही एक जो है ना वह magazine design करता था और उससे मुझे उस time पर आ जाते थे तकरीबन पूरे project के I think तीन लाख रुपए पूरे साल के. I was supporting and then you know my brother he also ventured into a couple of you know businesses. तो graphic designing से मैंने अपना career start किया and उसके बाद फिर further studies करनी थी obviously क्योंकि पढ़ाई जो थी उसको थोड़ी अहमियत you know अलहम्दुर अल्लाह अलहम्दुर अल्लाह पढ़ाई को compromise नहीं किया. I used to go to this library, defense central library यहां पर एक थी DCL. तो MBA के लिए apply किया KSBL university है क्राची school for business leadership.
उस्मान भाई अगर यहां पर मैं आपसे एक pause लूं before you go forward with the MBA. So मैंने ना I've I've I've spoken to, I mean, you would probably be the four hundred and seventy fifth individual that I'm talking to. और I've spoken to all sorts of people. I've spoken to people जो कि बड़ी business families, you know, billionaires for the last thirty years. And I've spoken to people self made completely. कहीं से bottom of the pyramid से आए और they've been able to create incredible wealth and opportunity for themselves. I see five to seven people with this sort of a, I don't know, I wanna say this nicely. But with this sort of a excuse driven attitude And more often than not they come with the idea कि यार यह privilege था, इसकी you know army background था या इसका पैसा था इसका बाप दादा के पास, assets थे. मैं यह देखता हूं Pakistan में कि a vast majority of the population refuses to dream. I wanna channel that energy कि यार उस्मान आज का बहुत बातें कर सकते हैं in hindsight. When he is going to school, when he is going around, you know, there are kids who are partying it up because it's dad's money And they would never be able to even imagine what you're going through, not because just because of the lack of financial privilege that you have, but also You know, there is a fallback. If you don't have your father, there is a certain sense of loneliness that seeps into you. And at that age that you were at, I'm sure And with all of that, you you decided to take these sort of risks Saint Michael is a phenomenal school and I'm sure that it would have built a lot of character in you as well. What led you to continue to go back to jobs? What led you to stay at 8,000 rupees a month job? यानी कि for someone coming from your category, आपका तो petrol का या bus का ख़र्चा जो है वह आठ हज़ार रुपया होगा. तो वहां पर the decision making I'm seeing कि एक decision making है जो कि constantly fear driven नहीं है. So I'm curious about that thought process and how sort of that evolved you. I think
जो upbringing थी that came from my father because he was an educated man and obviously एक वह हमेशा से family में था you know कि पढ़ाई को तर्जी दी गई थी, ठीक है? I think family plays a pivotal role over here I think that was a factor कि I said कि नहीं मतलब पढ़ाई तो करनी है ना मतलब there was no question about कि यार ठीक है यह circumstances आ गए और support करना है but नहीं पढ़ाई was there कि यार पढ़ना तो है. My brother for the good I think he left school when he was in cast 10. My father did not pass away that time. He was alive but obviously we are struggling. तो he, my brother left because obviously we couldn't afford. He couldn't afford you know my father couldn't afford कि उनकी पढ़ाई बड़े भाई की continue तो he you know he was working with my father at that time as a graphic designer too in his advertising agency but class 10 के बाद privately उन्होंने जो है वह O levels के exams दिए. And then when my father passed away तो for the for good three four years he didn't enrolled himself in any you know institute because उस वक्त वह इतना he was heading the family और उस वक्त काम करना था but then he you know he said नहीं. खुद भी अलहम्द उल्लाह he enrolled himself and became a lawyer and right now अलहम्द IBM में he is a professor and business business कर रहे हैं साथ साथ. Berkeley से मशहलास उन्होंने UC Berkeley से he became you know he did his LLM और वह सब वही वाली बात है. जैसे मैं अलम्दोल्ला एक self made he also you know was a self made is a self made man और वही वाली बात है इतना पैसा नहीं था but एक एक अंदर एक energy थी एक वह था और he ended up going to UC Berkeley.
Exactly
और मतलब पैसा चूंकि US में जाकर पढ़ाई करना it's it's an expensive thing but वहां पर भी अलम दिल्ला you know he got scholarship ठीक है और वही था कि एक थी अंदर से drive थी कि यार पढ़ाई जो है ना वह उसको compromise नहीं करना.
No that makes sense I think वही वाली बात है कि जो जो जो important चीज़ that what I wanted to channel here was कि आपने direction बनानी होती है, things happen. Trust. Trust the world कि, you know, पहले direction तो बनाओ, पहले options को discover तो करो. You might not really know कि अगर नहीं भी है पैसे, nobody is saying कि आप अपनी जेब से ही करेंगे. So, circling back to, you know, you then went to कराची.
What was that? KSBL, कराची school. KSBL.
And you decided to do your MBA. What year was this? 2013.
Right. और यह executive MBA था या full time MBA? Full time में. Mean, were you working on the side as well? Yes yes.
Nice. So how was the MBA?
MBA was pretty good. एक बहुत ही different it was a general MBA और उस वक्त नया नया KSBIL started और सारे you know top K professors and all of that you know दावध group ने university launch की थी. तो it was a very good experience. तो पहला experience था university का दोस्त होस बने, एक social life देखी, university life देखी. It was a good experience.
Nice और दो हज़ार पंद्रह में my understanding is you graduated and then you उसी
वक़्त you started खजाने as well. मैंने आपको बताया था मैंने मैंने क्यों MBA में admission लिया था वह मैंने इसलिए लिया था because I wanted to मैंने जब as a audit training काम कर रहा था तो I मैंने realize किया था कि मैं finance accounts का बंदा नहीं हूं. I wasn't carved for to become a you know accountant and you know. I could you know shift my career from accounting and finance to marketing. I kept on applying I started working on different business ideas. Fail fast वाला जो concept है ना कि you know, you venture into something. आपको आप नहीं हो रहा तो just you know quickly आप foreign दूसरे में हा जाओ. वह था कि बस एक दिन उठा और just you know कि यार यह used वाली चीज़ because back in the days when I was in school तो मैं चूंकि पैसे नहीं थे. I had been a consumer of लुंडा. Since an early age. वह start कर दिया और yeah, that's how I stumbled upon.
Idea interesting. What year was this when you officially started? 2015 MBA के Idea in terms of again आप गए. So what was the in your mind what was the market that you were seeing या what am I exactly
doing in terms of this entire market? Why? Because, probably because original तो there was concept obviously लुंडा तो एक जब से I think Pakistan बना है तब से लुंडे का काम हो रहा है. I don't know कब से हो रहा but market तो है ही इसकी. तो I think इस idea को test करना was not the कि यार यह लुंडा कोई खरीदेगा नहीं खरीदेगा वह तो खरीद ही रहा है.
Nice. Over the last I mean you're you're celebrating your tenth year in 2025. How has, हां, how has ख़ज़ाने evolved over the last ten years? I mean starting from a very small I'm sure At what point जो आपने कहा ना कि online वाली testing नहीं हुई थी. How did you set up the operations? How did you scale those operations? How did you और हर business में I I feel like जब आप नया business शुरू करते हैं, passion and confidence can only drive you so far. There is always a moment
Because startup और वह वाला जो पूरा ecosystem है ना कि startup कर रहा है and he is the founder and CEO तो I couldn't tell proudly जैसे अब लोग आकर LinkedIn में लिखते ना अब तो कुछ भी करते हैं CEO and founder of this this this ठीक है. For the good three four months he didn't know exactly तो I dodged that but खैर तो interesting thrifting तो अब हो गया but उस वक़्त जो था वही था second hand used ठीक है वह काम कर रहा है everybody makes नहीं तो how did it evolve in the last ज़्यादातर इसके अंदर market वाली भी चला रहे हैं and मैं गया हूं और मैं जाकर pant shirt गलती से पहन के चला गया था, ठीक है? तो यह कौन डंदा आ गया यह हम भी grading ऐसी करेंगे nine on 10, ten on ten. IPhone five yes. Right. तो उसने अपना startup start किया था इसी का computer science और यही website development and all. वह leopard courier वाले थे उनसे delivery कराई तो that's how it started and then you know from one to two to three, four, five IBM में we were incubated for two years और वहीं से we expanded, अलम्दोयल app तो that's yeah. Interesting.
I'm curious about that first order. So, I mean, you had a website, you had the shoes, you had everything, but the majority of the people would be confused. Media buying का I'm not sure उस time पर आपका वह वाला experience होगा कि यार मैं ad लगाऊंगा और वह आ जाएगा. How did you start selling the first set of pair of shoes?
I think Facebook was Facebook was the platform. So it was only Facebook. There was no TikTok. It was only, there was no LinkedIn था. हां, but yes Facebook was the only medium.
Interesting.
From that environment, whether whether directly through that incubator or the people that were there that helped you structure yourself? क्योंकि for a lot of people, यह जो आपके वाला चीज़ है ना, यह basically आप ख़ुद एक एक space में हैं. आपने ख़ुद thrifting की भी है and so therefore you understand कि यार यह market कैसी है? तो for you to understand इसका consumer वह problem नहीं था. I feel like incubation and being around the right sort of people helps you in building those systems. Did that happen for you as well?
It was yes. Overheads नहीं थे शुरू के for you know for मतलब internet मिला हुआ था मुफ्त में. But inside generation नहीं थी ज़्यादा वहां से you think? नहीं because मेरा जो idea था thrifting का it was मतलब बिल्कुल नई चीज़ थी एक बिल्कुल. There was no rule book. There was no benchmark not only in Pakistan मतलब पूरी दुनिया में मतलब thrifting का culture eBay के अंदर eBay was a market place ठीक है. There was no e com for thrifting You're disrupting. You you have come with a new idea. तो there was no rule book. तो I had वही वाली बात है कि had to create everything from scratch. तो everything from scratch.
Tell me about the Y Combinator experience. My understanding is that within 2036 and you actually physically met Sam Altman when the rest of the world had no idea who this guy was. Yes. Tell me about that experience. I met him on on
Skype. You went up on Skype? I see. My brother is also a, you know, partner in खजाने. He made it to Y Combinator and my, my partner, He is no more in खजाने but वो हम बहुत पहले वो वो exit कर गया था but they both got the visa ठीक है but मेरा नहीं आया था तो I was on Sky but yes they met Sam Altman. But what happened? How did that happen?
What did you, what was that experience like?
For an interview not in the incubation. Interview के लिए they called your मतलब we will pay your expenses to come over there airline tickets and all and please schedule और वह online calendar पर जाकर अपना आप चुना वह schedule कर ले interview. पहला interview हुआ, they loved the idea but then second interview के लिए बुलाया. Usually होते नहीं हैं second but पहले नहीं वह yes or no कर देते हैं. They called us for a second interview and then they were like कि यार आप लोग idea बहुत अच्छा है but आप लोग खरीद के बेच रहे हो और यह आप लोग कितना माल खरीदोगे? आप लोगों क्योंकि they invest in you know unicorns जो उनको लगता है यार यह unicorn बनेगी, billion dollar company बनेगी. Scalable हां. हां, they were like यार आपको अगर billion dollar बनना है तो आपको million dollar की inventory खरीदनी पड़ेगी. इतने पैसे और यह सब करना तो आप लोग market base model में shift करें जहां पर आप consumer मतलब you know c to c model करें कि आप एक consumer से ही आप उसका जूते लें और उसको refurbish करें और एक और दूसरे consumer को बेचें. You become दराज़ और Amazon of used shoes. तो हमने बोला अच्छा तो they said कि आप अभी यह इस पर experiment कर रहे हो and then you reapply in the next patch. तो वहां से we came back, shifted our model and it didn't work in Pakistan. Why? Because What
was the shift there in terms of आपने बस कहा कि आओ और आ के अपने अपने जूते list कर दो and we will help you connect with the buyer या
were you actually refurbing in the middle as well? हम उसको refurbish करेंगे and we list it online and then once it's sold, we'll pay you, ठीक है? वापस से हमने अपने original model पर चले गए and then we didn't apply to YC.
Of course. मुझे यह बताएं कि at this point in time, is it are these shoes just when you say refurb, are they just washed या दर्मया में छोटी बड़ी quirks होती है ना? They can actually fix a lot of things.
That is the reason why, And sports issues आ रहे थे. Now what we do is that
Right, makes sense. You kept yourself to shoes, right? So मैं मैं जो आपके उसमें पूरे product में देख रहा हूं, the real value chain is in that, refurbishing engine that you're creating more so than the idea that जूत, I mean, there's obviously consumer But in terms of business value addition, I think the real value addition is the is the fact that you can take an item. You can clean it up. You can sort it down. You can list it. You can get it sold. And from that, वह जो optimization है ना in terms of इस वक़्त अगर माल पड़ा हुआ है Pakistan में x amount क्यों नहीं scale करते? Even if ख़ज़ाने के नाम से नहीं करना चाहते तो किसी दूसरे उसमें घुस जाओ, कपड़ों में घुस जाओ because कपड़ों की market is in is huge, right? Why did you not try to expand? Did you try to expand and then you decided to otherwise?
जूतों के साथ हमने used belts भी बेची, हमने used books भी बेची, used men's shirts भी बेची, used toys भी बेचे, used electronics भी बेचे, used sports goods भी बेचे, tennis के rackets भी थे. But हर category इतनी ज़्यादा इसकी एक तो sourcing is an, is a challenge, not that easy और फिर उसका जो पूरा process of refurbishing हर category का अलग process है. Right. Yes, it's a very big market.
Give me some numbers in terms of, you know, how many people are you at this point in time in terms of employment? How many outlets do you have? How many orders are you processing every month? What's the revenue looking like? What's the scale of the operations?
Right now, are standing at, I think, we have sold over a million pairs of shoes since the inception Monthly, process around 10,000 plus orders We are a team of 130 plus people and yeah.
Interesting. Yeah. Outlets?
May में खोली थी इस्लामपाद में I nine के अंदर, I I nine में yes and चौथी जो खोली है वह भी कराची में DHA में खोली है ख़बाने पत्र पर. यह आपकी outlet सारी profitable है at this point in time? जी.
In terms of the revenue, and I'm curious because इलाहाबाद में आपने I nine में खोली है. So I understand the warehousing style of business. But you didn't go for, like, a like, a commercial center जहां पर already, let's say, f 10 है. You know, आसान चप्पल store है. इस case में you're basically saying कि यार जब तक कोई ऐसा customer जो कि already मुझे जानता है और मेरे से शायद online ख़रीद चुका है, वह फिर ख़ुद से जाएगा और वह out of the way जाकर ख़रीदेगा. ज़मज़मा for example is a is a commercial center. सलाहबाद में जो आपने खोला है that's not necessarily a hard work commercial center and so that's an add that's a add on to your existing customer base या या उसी को ही आप आगे push कर रहे हैं. You're not necessarily adding the brand equity. What was the thought process there?
experiment. There is no rule book. तो I wanted to try something new with खजाने. तो उनको मैं जब stores देखी है यार इतने huge huge stores हैं and they are like you know people वह commercial centers के अंदर भी होते but out of the way जाकर भी होते हैं like you know highway पर कहीं कोने पर बना हुआ है, IKEA बना हुआ है, highway पर कहीं बना हुआ है. तो people know the brand, people specifically go there to buy and they need that big space क्योंकि उनका model भी ऐसा ही है कि they are selling you know overstock and leftover items. They can't stock it in a you know in a small space. I-nine was right in the center. I-nine I guess
They're costing two to three x what your bottom of the pyramid stall As these brands are maturing and they're growing up, Yes. So customer की जो brand equity है वह down नहीं होती क्योंकि वह main store के ऊपर recent माल है high priced है. So there is a very real market opportunity here बिल्कुल. Of something like Ross and Marshall.
Do you think कि eventually you would want to go into that model as well where इस वक़्त जो है ना वह मैं जो जो second hand तो मैं कर रहा हूं. लेकिन चूंकि मेरे पास अब यह पूरा का पूरा there's a potential partnership opportunity there where you can increase the the volume of material available with you radically without having to put in a lot of investment.
जो आपने exactly बोला ना वह हमने approach पी किए brands को but उनका mindset वही वाली बात है उस वक्त यह जो अब brands आए हैं ना I think यह वाले जो अब entrepreneurs हैं probably they would understand and they would get rid of that product but आपने जो बोला कि brands end तक चले जाते हैं कि यार नहीं हमने अपना product जो है ना seventy, eighty, 90, 100 मुफ्त में दे देंगे किसी और को नहीं देना. हमने try किया penetrate करने हमने approach किए brands को but they were not willing to give us their leftover. खज़ाने tried this before. I think it wasn't the right time but right now Manto is willing to you know get rid of that stock
Exactly. यह यह I think
if ख़ज़ान यह doesn't go, I think those who are listening, it's a big opportunity कि वह brands को approach करें, उनका left world लें and, you know, they create a Ross Marshal in Pakistan.
Interesting. So, you know, you said मतलब वह random होता है, blind blind box होता है या वह, you know, sorted होता है? Yes.
तो there is a constraint. तो that's one challenge which we are facing right now.
इसके अंदर do you think you'll get back into clothing? Not belts, not books, not any of that. Explosion हुई है in terms of clothing. फ़र्क़ obviously यह है कि the way that you've built your technology I think is is phenomenal. It's phenomenal. Like, you go to the website and it's like And then even जो आपने उसके ऊपर the way that you've created the branding experience of the visual imagery of this and that, do you suddenly feel like you, कहीं से आपको यह feel नहीं होता कि यार मैं secondhand कर रहा हूं. And I think that's that's well done. वह चीज़ कपड़ों में obviously, you have that DNA where you've been able to create that. कपड़ों में वह चीज़ उतना से exist नहीं कर रही at this point in time. Yes. Do you think you'll go back into cloth, like clothing? Because I feel like the scale, the size of that market is just absolutely phenomenal. Yes. The movement, मतलब जब मैं सुनता हूं ना कि अभी पिछले दिनों मैंने numbers निकाले थे podcast के लिए तो basically जो आपके top brands हैं fashion के, they're doing like $3,040,000,000,000 a year जो कि, you know, it's insane. Do you think you'll get into that anytime soon? Whether that is thrifting or let's say आपने कहा कि यार off season माल या leftover माल या something like that?
अच्छा, used clothing, yes. Used clothing I would say back in 02/1516 जब हम shoes कर रहे थे तो clothing का response was equally good as shoes but I had to choose one ठीक है? Clothing yes, in the past two three years Pakistan Globally भी अगर आप देखें तो there is US का ना thread up के नाम से एक है. It's very big. UK के अंदर there is thrift plus. They are into clothing as well. Clothing is, I assume it's much much bigger market than footwear And yes, we plan on coming into clothing as well So probably 2026 next year you will see clothing, we will different categories, sports wear and casual,
men's shirts, women's shirts, hoodies, winterwear. तो इंशाना इसके अंदर, do you think the model that you're going to go for again is the same कि यार बाहर से माल मंगवाकर, sort करके बेचना है या इसमें आप local market को भी tap कर सकते हैं?
There is an opportunity I am not sure मैं वह करूंगा, अभी नहीं करूंगा but yes used के अंदर तो I know कि यार एक supply set है US के अंदर जिससे जूते ले रहा हूं वह मुझे clothing भी दे देगा, straight forward है. तो probably I'll start with this and then देखते हुए pivot करना है, you know, towards local. What I'm curious about is,
That's a ख्वारी. I'm curious about that particularly because मैं purely consumer lens से बोल रहा हूं, so it might sound dumb. तो Pakistan में generally, either you either you have and and and fashion has become so fast कि you're constantly buying. Your wardrobes do not hold enough pieces more often than not. Right? God alone knows. But, you know, as we've discussed earlier कि there's a lot of middle class that is now getting into the the branded space. उसमें local brands भी हैं, international brands भी हैं one way or the other. I'm curious कि मेरे हिसाब से तो अगर एक model ऐसा exist करता है जिसमें मेरे पास ख़ज़ाने आते हैं वह कहता है यार आप season के end में ना मेरे पास दो options हैं as a consumer. Mhmm. Obviously, if I can afford that, that's great. But there is an alternative requirement as well and We will refurb and repurpose it. We will sell it, and we will give you something for it. Mhmm. तो as a consumer, in my opinion, I would just go for that option because मेरे लिए वह net zero है effectively.
Right?
मैं तो यह कह रहा हूं कि और majority of the people are just taking clothes out and putting it in a box and that box collectively has some value that can be generated out of it. And that clothing can be optimized to reach the right consumer at a lower price point. That engine, I feel like, that engine theoretically can be used in shoes as well, but I'm Pakistan में जारिश shoes market is very different. But clothing is very different on that comparatively. मैंने शायद ज़िंदगी में ends all together and you get an infinite volume or or or supply from the existing industry. And that's sort of what what a lot of these pre loved and these businesses are doing, right?
Yes, we didn't experiment in this segment. But I personally think कि आपने जैसे बोला कि majority of the people वह boxes में डालकर, are you sure majority लोग हैं ऐसे? Because actually मैं तो अपने मैं अपने bubble की बात करूंगा am a professional in this way मैं bubble का ही जब हमने हमने वह YC के बाद हमने जब जूतों के साथ experiment किया ना तो वह जो majority है ना उसके पास वह product नहीं है, वह brand नहीं है. I think that's a very small segment मैंने अभी तक experiment नहीं किया but I personally think कि Pakistan के अंदर वह fast fashion वाला culture अभी उस तरीके से आई नहीं है. I am curious about that.
Majority is
male. Percentage नहीं है but sports shoes हैं and you know male क्योंकि Pakistan के अंदर culture women जो है वह शर्मार गनीज के नीचे easton के नीचे sports shoes नहीं बनते हैं. तो I I I understand.
surprisingly so so my wife Are you selling this? Can you sell this to me? Influencers, women fashion and and women as buyers पहली बात. मेरे हिसाब से ना आपने बिल्कुल सही बात बोली, men as a buyer is the worst buyer because वह पहले तो जो है ना नहीं करता. So so the minute you change the the buyer itself, whether even it's for for the men thing, Because women as buyers, they're generally much easier to to to work with. Yes. And particularly in the preloved category, I feel like मैं यह देख रहा हूं कि because इस category को सिर्फ़ और सिर्फ़ हवातीन ही समझ पाई हैं और हवातीन ही कोशिश कर रही हैं, तो there is an opportunity for you to come in and disrupt because the scale and the space में थी जिन्होंने उस opportunity को realize कर लिया और वह उसके अंदर घुस गए हैं. But obviously they, I'm not saying they're bad people. They're definitely doing incredible work. But they don't have that expertise of the systems, the processes, the scale, So personally, I would recommend That is a very good idea. I think there is a great opportunity there that you should definitely explore.
मतलब influencer and then link tree and वहां से traffic extract करना लाना good.
थोड़ा सा we're almost at the one hour thirty minute mark. I'm I'm I'd be curious to know where do you see this going now? What's your five year plan? What's your ten year plan? And थोड़ा सा मुझे इसके बारे में बताइएगा कि what is your generally gross margin in this business? What's the again, EBITDA, gross margin? Have you taken investment? Retail costs quite a lot. I know that for a fact. तो how do you expect to grow there? या आपका इतना cash flow इतना ज़बरदस्त हो चुका हुआ है कि आप हर साल दो चार outlets बना सकते हैं because of the fact that you have the margin to be able to invest in that. Tell me a bit about that.
तो वह fancy और वह investment उठाना और you know वहां पर आपका article आ गया कि they have raised this much amount of money. My bread and butter was खजाने. तो हमेशा से you know I was it was a bootstrap model and profit was the main objective not the sales. तो that is not a real ठीक है? वह तो खैर खज़ाने was, was built on sustainable grounds और उसको हमने sustainable growth की तरफ and profitability profit निकाल के कुछ घर लेगा और बाकी reinvest कर दिया. तो बस एक हां यह है कि yes I want to see खजाने कि यार यह outlets हों एक एक है.
So outlet से अगर मैं आपसे पूछूं did you ever think about franchise model where you can say कि ok, I don't want to get equity in my core brand, but I want to obviously देखिए capital is very very useful. Globally जब आप businesses को study करते हैं तो access to capital is what drives business and drives the scale. Then third is कि यार मैं जाता हूं debt debt के पास. Fourth, I think वह यही है कि यार एक particular scale के बाद जो कि मैं आजकल सबको poke कर रहा हूं और उनके दिमागों में brainwashing कर रहा हूं कि do you think you'll ever go into IPO where particularly very very loved brands जिनके customer base, एक loyal customer base strong create हो रही है. आपकी books वगैरह आप system सारे हैं for the IPO के We are working मतलब
We are not there yet. It will take probably थोड़ा और time लगेगा but वह thought आता है जाता है, आता जाता है but it's not completely gone. It's shelved at the moment. वह ख्वाब एक ख्वाब है जो इंशालाह down the line हम, you know, उस पर काम करेंगे. So that was one challenge and They purchase the stock on our behalf. Right. Right. तो we get time. They get profit. I see. So this is how So
it's like a local आपने basically आपने local debt figure out कर लिया है. Local debt which is not that expensive. Generally जब the the the money that they end up making, is it does it beat inflation? हालांकि the fact that the government and the banks can print money freely is that अगर मैं सिर्फ़ और सिर्फ़ जो average out inflation है अगर मैं उसी को ही capture करूं तो that is the actual equating the the value. यह नहीं हो सकता कि return actually is now interest going in the other direction. Rather than me as a as a lender, gathering interest and taking more value than what I gave, I am now losing value or the return side is actually losing value when they're returning. So I'm curious about that particular model. It's it's it's a bit more complicated.
तो हम we we are playing somewhere between 20 to 30% का profit after year.
Makes sense. I'm going to wrap this up. First time, it's a phenomenal story and, you know Thank you. I love the brand that you've created. I love that you're reimagining this entire thrift market. Pakistan, unfortunately, as with all the things, narrative I'm I'm glad that you've broken that narrative. And now I think the snowball effect is about to kick in where this is going to grow radically in in in the coming years. And I I I hope to see you as at the periphery of that. Insured. As well. Thank you so much for taking the time out. I I have just one last question that I generally ask all of my guests, and I'm curious about your response as well. How do you see Pakistan twenty five years from now, knowing what you know now, seeing what you've seen? Obviously, you've, you've gone to The US. You've gone around, and you've explored the world as well. You choose to stay in Pakistan. You choose to invest in Pakistan. And, from having seeing very hard times to to creating this incredible company. You know, Pakistan, one way or the other has worked out for you. Right? Like, even with all of its problems Yes. You were able to maneuver through them, you were able to create something great out of it. I'm curious पच्चीस साल बाद का Pakistan आप कैसे देखते हैं without the ifs and buts कि अगर government ने यह कर लिया, अगर लोगों ने यह कर लिया, just whatever you see today उसको extrapolate करें and tell me the vision of 2050.
Pakistan का vision?
Mhmm.
Pakistan I would say is not a business friendly country. अभी आपको क्या मतलब बहुत बड़ा topic आपने छेड़ दिया है इसको तो मतलब yes it's going to be really really hard I think and साथ alternate जो है वह हम expansion out of Pakistan भी देख रहे होते हैं to be honest ठीक है कि में जाती है foreign currency में purchases होती हैं तो beach में bank payment ही नहीं कर रहे थे. मतलब इतने business जो थे वह चारे बंद भी हो गए तो it's it's it's a very मतलब place to be at. Tough place to be at. तो there are a lot of, a lot of problems and I don't see improvements
in future. You don't see these problems getting fixed? Nope. Not at all. And do you think assuming that these fundamentals are fixed, do you think there is potential for rapid growth should the fundamentals be fixed? Should the BYJU'S availability be sorted? Should the Internet availability be sorted? Should law and order and security is comparatively better, much better than what it is now? Do you think कि then there is a lot of opportunity or do you think कि अभी बड़े और मसले हैं?
Solar अपना लगा लिया but yes अगर यह basics अगर सही से provide हो जाएं जो basic infrastructure चाहिए होता एक business को flourish करने के लिए तो yes Pakistan की market, Pakistan के बहुत बड़ी market है और it's it's a very good market to be in. अगर यह basic सही हो जाएं और business जो है आपका definitely it will fresh. तो
yeah. Makes sense. Couple of things I'd love to share with the audience. एक तो यह है कि आपने चुके दो internet और बिजली की बात की तो internet के ऊपर government has actually created a great policy recently जिसमें right of way का एक concept होता है where you can when you put in the fiber optic cable तो आपको एक cost देनी पड़ती है government को और आपको bureaucracy से approval लेना पड़ता है जो कि उन्होंने ख़त्म कर दिया है. This happened couple of weeks ago and now theoretically anyone can get into the business of deploying fiber optic cables and bring it anywhere they want without having to pay any charges to the government. Pakistan Railway has played a huge role. So जहां पर उनकी property है, you can actually deploy the fiber optic cable and there's gonna be a lot of businesses that are gonna emerge now जो कि उस infrastructure को potentially आने वाले वक़्त में बेहतर करेंगे. And majority of the plants we know that have gone live from 2018 to 2023. So basically, जो in the long, timeline जो हम देख रहे हैं, वह यह देख रहे कि 2028 में थोड़ा सा हमें pressure relief होना शुरू होगा. And 2033 तक, basically हमारी effectively जो इस वक़्त capacity है पचास हज़ार megawatt की, जिसमें से हम तकरीबन कोई बाइस से पच्चीस हज़ार use करते हैं और वह इस वजह से use करते हैं क्योंकि the cost is so high that we we can't afford it. तो there is a lot of macro changes that are happening that will definitely in the in the medium term will will show results. But, I do agree that the sentiment right now is possibly probably not the most ideal. We've just come out of a horrible नाज़ुक mode as we get into one every two to three years, and I hope that we can at least reduce the frequency of these नाज़ुक modes over time. उस्मान भाई, thank you so much for coming in and sharing all that insight, and I look forward to seeing how you guys grow here on fourth. Pleasure is all mine. Thank you. Thank you for inviting. And for all of you guys, let me know in the comment section below. Have you tried to buy from खज़ाने? What has your experience been like? Are there areas of improvement? Are there any particular things that you like? Let me know in the comment section below. But nonetheless, this was You are watching thought behind things. Thank you so much for watching, I'll see you in the next one.
